GRISELIAN
BRITISH TIPPED SHORTHAIRS
WHAT
ARE BRITISH TIPPED??
The British tipped cat came into being in
the early seventies and has grown in popularity ever since. Initially bred
by Norman Winder of the Peerless prefix, all tippies will be able to trace
their ancestry back to his lines. They were initially called "Shorthaired
Chinchillas" but after gaining preliminary status for the showbench the
more precise name of "British Shorthair Tipped"
was used.
COLOURS
Although most of the original
tippes were black tipped they are recognized in all the acceptable british
colours
Coat colouring should be even
and restricted to the tips of the hairs to give a sparkling effect. The
evenness of the tipping is more important the the amount (or heaviness)
of the tipping. The tipping should appear on the head, ears, face, along
the body, down the flanks and on the upper surface of the tail, with a
little tipping extending down the legs. The chin, chest, belly, inner
legs and the underside of the tail should be very pale silver as should
the undercoat, usually appearing white.
The pawpads should match the
colour of the tipping.
BODY
The tipped, like all british,
should be muscular, short backed with thick short legs giving a chunky
appearance often called cobby. they have large round paws making the excellent
climbers and very agile. Males will be bigger than females.
TAIL
the tail should be medium in length,
thick with a rounded end. ideally there should be no ghost markings or
rings (inherited from their tabby ancestry) but these may be seen in kittens
which will disappear with age. In heavier tipped cats these rings may remain
visible.
HEAD
As with all British cats the head
should be large and round with a broad skull and full chubby cheeks sat
on a short thick neck. the nose should be broad and straight with a slight
break. The nose leather should be brick red and outlined in the same colour
as the tipping. EARS
The ears shoulde be small rounded and set well apart on the head.
EYES The eyes should be large and round.
in the black tipped cats the eyes are green in all other colours should
be copper, orange or deep gold. The skin around the eyes should be
outlined in the same colour as the tipping. In black tipped cats it looks
as if the cat is wearing eyeliner.
COAT
The british coat should short,
dense and plushy with a crispness when felt. as a relatively new breed
decended from longhaired cats some british tipped have slightly longer
and softer coats.
TEMPERAMENT
The tipped cat is typically british,
laid back and very affectionate but equally adept at letting you know their
likes and dislikes. They have quick reactions and like to play, they have
often been described as a 'one person cat'.
